Day 2 Cai Be – Sa Dec

Wake to the rhythmic sounds of the Mekong as the ship anchors near Cai Be. After breakfast, step onto a traditional rowing boat, where a local in a conical hat skillfully navigates the labyrinthine waterways. These canals, lined with swaying palms and traditional houses, offer a glimpse into life in the delta. At a riverside cottage industry, observe artisans producing rice paper, rice wine, and the region’s famous popped rice. The visit concludes with a browse through local handicrafts and vibrant oil paintings before returning to the ship for a sumptuous buffet lunch.

In the afternoon, the journey continues towards Sa Dec, a historic riverside town brimming with charm. A guided walk takes you to the former home of Mr. Huynh Thuy Le, the inspiration behind Marguerite Duras’ novel The Lover. The visit to Kien An Cung, a beautifully preserved Chinese temple, deepens the cultural experience. From here, explore Sa Dec’s lively market, where stalls overflow with fresh produce, seafood, and aromatic herbs, providing an authentic snapshot of daily life in Vietnam.

Day 3 My An Hung - Long Khanh A Island

The day begins with a visit to My An Hung, a picturesque farming village along the Mekong Delta. A village family welcomes you into their home, offering fresh coconut water and honey tea while traditional musicians perform don ca tai tu, a melodic folk music of the delta. Before returning to the ship, young martial artists demonstrate Vovinam, a unique Vietnamese martial art that combines self-defence with acrobatic flair.

In the afternoon, arrive at Long Khanh A Island, near the Cambodia border, a community renowned for its intricate Khmer scarves. Strolling through the village, witness artisans at work, skilfully weaving traditional patterns passed down through generations. Some homes double as embroidery studios, where delicate floral designs take shape. Few Westerners have visited this region, and the locals greet visitors with genuine warmth. Before leaving, a visit to a local war veteran’s home provides a heartfelt perspective on the country’s past and resilience.

As the ship nears the Cambodia border, formalities are completed, allowing time to unwind.
