JAPAN

The Land of the Rising Sun

Uncover Japan’s ancient traditions, vibrant cities, and breathtaking landscapes.

Discover Japan

Japan is a land where timeless tradition and cutting-edge innovation exist side by side, creating an experience unlike any other. From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo, where towering skyscrapers reflect the energy of modern life, to the quiet elegance of Kyoto’s ancient temples and tea houses, Japan invites you to discover its many layers. In the north, the powdery slopes of Niseko and Hakuba attract winter sports enthusiasts from around the world, while Hokkaido’s vast landscapes and hot springs offer year-round serenity.

Venture south to the cultural heart of Nara, where sacred deer roam freely and centuries-old shrines stand in tranquil forests. In Osaka, the nation’s kitchen, bustling street markets tempt visitors with the flavours of takoyaki and okonomiyaki, while the city’s vibrant nightlife pulses through neon streets. Travel onwards to Hiroshima, a city of resilience and reflection, where the Peace Memorial Park honours the past and Miyajima’s floating torii gate stands as a symbol of enduring beauty.

Whether you’re soaking in an onsen in Hakone with Mount Fuji on the horizon, wandering the historic lanes of Takayama, or marvelling at cherry blossoms in full bloom, Japan offers a journey of discovery, elegance, and unforgettable moments. This is a country that captivates the senses and stays in the heart long after your journey ends.

Japan is perfect for a wide range of travellers. Couples will love its romantic ryokans, peaceful gardens, and stunning seasonal landscapes. Families can enjoy interactive museums, theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland, and child-friendly hotels with traditional Japanese experiences. Solo travellers will appreciate the country’s safety, efficient transport, and welcoming atmosphere.

For adventure seekers, Japan offers world-class skiing, hiking trails, and diving. Culture enthusiasts can immerse themselves in traditional festivals, ancient temples, and regional crafts. Japan’s clean cities, excellent service, and attention to detail make it an ideal destination for luxury travellers looking for an effortless, enriching holiday.

Japan is a destination that offers an incredible variety of experiences, blending cultural discovery, natural beauty, and modern excitement. Whether you’re drawn to ancient traditions, cutting-edge technology, or outdoor adventure, there’s something here for every kind of traveller.

One of Japan’s most iconic experiences is witnessing the cherry blossom season, or sakura. From late March to early April, cities and countryside alike are transformed as delicate pink flowers blanket parks, temples, and riversides. Popular spots include Tokyo’s Ueno Park, Kyoto’s Philosopher’s Path, and Hirosaki Castle in the north. Picnicking beneath the blossoms, a tradition known as hanami, is a beautiful way to celebrate the arrival of spring.

For winter enthusiasts, Japan is home to some of the best ski resorts in the world. Hokkaido’s Niseko and Honshu’s Hakuba Valley offer powder snow, world-class slopes, and a long ski season that runs from December through to April. Whether you’re skiing, snowboarding, or enjoying après-ski in a cosy lodge, Japan’s alpine regions provide breathtaking scenery and excellent facilities.

No trip to Japan is complete without soaking in a traditional onsen. These natural hot springs are scattered throughout the country, with famous onsen towns like Hakone, Beppu, and Kusatsu offering a relaxing escape. Many are set in tranquil mountain settings or seaside locations, providing the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing or skiing. Staying at a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, often includes access to private onsens and exquisite multi-course kaiseki dinners.

History lovers can explore Japan’s deep and complex past. A visit to Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and Museum is a profoundly moving experience, offering insight into the tragic events of 1945 and the city’s remarkable recovery. The preserved Atomic Bomb Dome stands as a stark reminder of history, while the nearby island of Miyajima, with its famous floating torii gate, offers a place of reflection and peace.

For those seeking modern excitement, Tokyo and Osaka are hubs of shopping, nightlife, and entertainment. Wander through Shibuya’s famous scramble crossing, shop the latest fashion in Harajuku, or catch a sumo wrestling tournament in Ryogoku. Food lovers will be in heaven, whether dining at Michelin-starred sushi restaurants in Tokyo or sampling Osaka’s famous street foods like takoyaki and okonomiyaki.

From the serene beauty of ancient temples in Kyoto to hiking in the Japanese Alps, cruising on Lake Ashi with Mount Fuji in the distance, or snorkelling in the coral reefs of Okinawa, Japan offers a rich tapestry of experiences. It’s a place where every moment feels thoughtfully crafted, and where adventure and tranquillity coexist in perfect harmony.

The official currency in Japan is the Japanese Yen (¥). Banknotes are available in denominations of ¥1,000, ¥2,000, ¥5,000, and ¥10,000, while coins come in ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100, and ¥500.

Credit cards are accepted in many places, particularly in large cities, but it’s wise to carry cash for use in smaller towns, markets, and traditional establishments. ATMs that accept international cards are widely available, especially at convenience stores like 7-Eleven. Currency exchange is easy at airports, major banks, and hotels.

Tipping is not customary in Japan, and service charges are usually included in bills at restaurants or hotels.

Tokyo

Tokyo is a city of contrasts where the ultra-modern meets deep tradition. You’ll find ancient temples standing quietly amongst futuristic skyscrapers, and tiny ramen shops tucked beneath neon lights. Explore Shibuya’s famous scramble crossing, visit the tranquil Meiji Shrine, and shop luxury brands in Ginza. Art lovers can head to the Mori Art Museum or teamLabs Borderless for immersive experiences, while families enjoy attractions like Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea. Food is a major draw—whether you’re sampling sushi at Tsukiji Outer Market or dining in one of the city’s many Michelin-starred restaurants. For a more local vibe, wander through Asakusa and Nakamise Shopping Street. With excellent public transport and endless things to do, Tokyo is a great base for first-time travellers and seasoned explorers alike.

Kyoto

As Japan’s cultural heart, Kyoto is where you’ll experience the essence of old Japan. Home to more than 1,000 temples, it’s famous for its stunning shrines, Zen gardens, and traditional wooden machiya townhouses. Don’t miss Fushimi Inari’s red torii gates or the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). Stroll through Gion, where you might glimpse a geisha, and enjoy a traditional tea ceremony in a centuries-old teahouse. Kyoto is also renowned for kaiseki dining—an artful multi-course meal. The nearby Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Monkey Park offer beautiful outdoor escapes. In spring, cherry blossoms frame the Philosopher’s Path, while autumn brings brilliant red maple leaves. Kyoto offers a slower pace, steeped in tradition, and is ideal for couples or those wanting an immersive cultural experience.

Osaka

Osaka is Japan’s vibrant, fun-loving city known for its street food, nightlife, and friendly locals. Often called “Japan’s kitchen”, it’s a must-visit for foodies. Try takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes), and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) in the lively Dotonbori district. Osaka Castle, with its impressive stone walls and moat, offers a glimpse into the city’s samurai past. Shinsaibashi is a shopper’s paradise, and Universal Studios Japan is perfect for families. Osaka’s vibe is less formal than Tokyo’s, and visitors often find it warm and welcoming. Its location also makes it a great base to explore nearby cities like Nara, Kobe, and Kyoto, all within easy reach by train.

Nara

Just a short trip from Kyoto and Osaka, Nara is known for its rich history and cultural significance. It was Japan’s first permanent capital and remains home to some of the country’s oldest and largest temples. Todai-ji Temple houses the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), an enormous bronze statue that’s awe-inspiring to witness. Nara Park is famous for its friendly, free-roaming deer, which are considered sacred messengers of the gods. You can buy special deer crackers and feed them yourself. Other highlights include Kasuga Taisha Shrine and the peaceful Isuien Garden. Nara is ideal for a day trip, but an overnight stay allows you to experience the quiet beauty of the city once the day crowds have left.

Hiroshima

Hiroshima is a city with a powerful history and a message of peace. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum are deeply moving, offering insight into the city’s tragic past and inspiring message of hope. The Atomic Bomb Dome remains a symbol of resilience and remembrance. Take a short ferry ride to Miyajima Island, home to the iconic Itsukushima Shrine and its famous “floating” torii gate. Beyond its historical significance, Hiroshima offers great food—try okonomiyaki Hiroshima-style and fresh oysters. The city has a relaxed, friendly feel and makes a good base for exploring western Honshu, including the Shimanami Kaido cycling route and Onomichi.

Takayama

Takayama is a beautifully preserved town in the Japanese Alps, offering a glimpse into traditional Japan. Its old town (Sanmachi Suji) features Edo-period architecture, sake breweries, and charming shops selling local crafts. Visit Takayama Jinya, a former government office from the Edo period, and enjoy morning markets along the Miyagawa River. The nearby Hida Folk Village showcases traditional thatched-roof farmhouses, while Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a short bus ride away. Takayama is especially popular in spring and autumn, when festivals with ornate floats parade through the streets. The region is also known for Hida beef, a local specialty that rivals Kobe beef for its rich flavour and marbling.

Sapporo

Located on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, Sapporo is famous for its annual Snow Festival in February, which features spectacular ice sculptures and winter activities. In winter, Sapporo becomes a gateway to some of Japan’s best ski resorts. During warmer months, the city offers lovely parks, like Odori Park and Moerenuma Park, and the iconic Sapporo Beer Museum. Seafood lovers should visit Nijo Market for fresh crab, scallops, and uni (sea urchin). Sapporo is a lively, laid-back city with a growing reputation for craft beer and gourmet dining. It’s an ideal starting point for exploring Hokkaido’s mountains, hot springs, and national parks.

Hakone & Mount Fuji

Hakone is a popular getaway from Tokyo, known for its relaxing hot springs (onsen), art museums, and stunning views of Mount Fuji. Take a cruise on Lake Ashi, ride the Hakone Ropeway, and visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum, where contemporary sculptures blend with natural surroundings. Hakone also offers traditional ryokan stays, where you can experience Japanese hospitality and kaiseki cuisine. Mount Fuji itself is Japan’s highest peak and an iconic symbol. During climbing season (July to September), hikers can ascend its slopes for a sunrise view from the summit. Even if you don’t climb, the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes region offers scenic beauty and outdoor activities.

Hakuba

Hakuba, located in Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan’s top ski destinations and was a key venue for the 1998 Winter Olympics. It offers a wide range of ski resorts, such as Happo-One and Hakuba 47, catering to everyone from beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders. The area boasts reliable snowfall, powder conditions, and breathtaking alpine scenery. Off the slopes, visitors can relax in traditional onsens, explore local villages, and enjoy hearty Japanese mountain cuisine. In summer, Hakuba transforms into a hiking and mountain biking haven, with trails leading to alpine meadows, waterfalls, and panoramic mountain views.

Niseko

Niseko, located in Hokkaido, is world-renowned for its consistent powder snow and long ski season, attracting skiers and snowboarders from around the globe. The area includes four interconnected resorts: Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri, offering a variety of terrain for all skill levels. Niseko’s après-ski scene is lively, with an array of international restaurants, bars, and luxury accommodation options, including private chalets and boutique hotels. Beyond skiing, Niseko offers activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and hot spring bathing. In summer, it’s a beautiful destination for hiking, rafting, and golf. Niseko combines world-class winter sports with Japanese hospitality and stunning natural beauty.

Japan’s incredible variety makes it an ideal destination for all kinds of travellers. Adventure seekers will be drawn to its world-class ski slopes in Niseko and Hakuba, as well as hiking trails through the Japanese Alps and volcanic landscapes of Kyushu. Coastal regions and subtropical islands like Okinawa also offer snorkelling, diving, and kayaking for ocean lovers.

Cultural enthusiasts will find endless inspiration in Japan’s centuries-old traditions, Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and seasonal festivals. Whether attending a tea ceremony in Kyoto, exploring a samurai castle, or watching a sumo match in Tokyo, travellers can immerse themselves in a culture that reveres both heritage and ritual.

Food lovers will be spoilt for choice in Japan’s dynamic culinary scene. From fresh sushi at Tokyo’s fish markets to steaming bowls of ramen, delicate kaiseki meals, and Osaka’s famous street food, every region has its own flavours and specialties worth sampling.

Families will appreciate Japan’s safety, efficiency, and wide range of attractions. Theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan, interactive museums, and animal cafés provide fun for all ages, while family-friendly hotels and dining options make travelling with kids easy.

Luxury travellers will find refined experiences in every corner—from ryokan inns with private onsens and multi-course dinners to high-end shopping, scenic rail journeys, and exclusive cultural experiences that blend tradition with elegance.

Budget-conscious travellers can also enjoy Japan with affordable accommodation, extensive transport networks, and delicious meals from convenience stores and ramen shops. With well-marked signage, friendly locals, and excellent infrastructure, Japan is easy to navigate no matter your travel style.

Language

The official language is Japanese. In major tourist areas, signage and announcements are often available in English, but learning a few simple phrases is appreciated.

Visas

Australian passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism purposes.

Health & Safety

Japan is considered very safe, with low crime rates and high-quality healthcare. Tap water is safe to drink, and food hygiene standards are excellent.

Customs & Etiquette

Respect for others is a core part of Japanese culture. Remove your shoes before entering homes and certain traditional places. Be mindful of quiet zones on public transport and queues in public spaces.

What we love most about Japan is its remarkable ability to blend contrasts into one seamless, unforgettable experience. One day you might find yourself in the heart of Tokyo, surrounded by the buzz of Shibuya Crossing or exploring the colourful, creative streets of Harajuku, where fashion and pop culture collide. The energy of the city is infectious—ultra-modern, vibrant, and always one step ahead—yet just moments away, you can find quiet gardens, peaceful shrines, and serene tea houses offering a calm escape.

Then there’s Kyoto, where time seems to slow down. Walking through its historic streets, past ancient temples and traditional wooden houses, you’re transported to a world where geisha glide through Gion and centuries-old tea ceremonies are still part of daily life. The city’s elegance and deep sense of tradition make it a place to truly connect with Japan’s cultural heart.

Another thing we love is Japan’s incredible food. Whether it’s savouring freshly made sushi at a bustling Tokyo fish market, indulging in delicate kaiseki dining in Kyoto, or warming up with a bowl of rich miso ramen after a day on the slopes, every meal is an experience. Street food in Osaka, wagyu beef in Kobe, and fresh seafood in Hokkaido are just the beginning of Japan’s culinary journey.

For relaxation, there’s nothing quite like soaking in a steaming onsen in Hakone, surrounded by mountains and, if you’re lucky, a view of Mount Fuji. The sense of calm and renewal you feel in these traditional hot springs is something truly special.

And when winter arrives, Japan transforms into a skier’s paradise. Resorts like Niseko and Hakuba offer some of the world’s best powder snow, luxurious lodges, and a lively après-ski scene. Whether you’re carving fresh tracks in the morning or soaking in an onsen after a day on the slopes, Japan’s ski season offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation.

At every turn, Japan delights with its attention to detail, its deep respect for tradition, and its embrace of modern life. It’s a place that stays with you long after you leave.
